Pietermaritzburg is the capital of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The city of Pietermaritzburg (commonly shortened to Maritzburg) is a beautiful city Victorian, most famous for its history and architecture.
Pietermaritzburg was founded in 1838 by Voortrekkers and has also served as the capital of the briefly existing Boer Natalia Republic (1839-1843) before being conquered by the British Empire. Pietermaritzburg is remained the capital of the new province of Natal and was also home to Mahatma Gandhi for about 20 years. Today you will find a statue in his memorial on Church Street in Pietermaritzburg.
What to see in Pietermaritzburg?
Pietermaritzburg is famous for its architecture among other things, but the structure is the largest city hall in the Central Business District (CBD) and is actually the largest building of red brick in the southern hemisphere!
The city has a number of other museums including the Voortrekker Museum, which documents the journey of the Afrikaner people processed in Africa, the Natal Society Library, located near the Hotel de Ville and the Tatham Art Gallery, which houses many works of fine art and a large collection of pottery and beadwork indigenous tribes.

Take your binoculars and take a trip to the African bush. Here, you come across a number of nature reserves such as Albert Falls Resources Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife at Queen Elizabeth Park (overlooking the city) or visit the reptile park at the Center for wildlife rehabilitation.
The campaign surrounding is also some spectacular waterfalls. Take a drive 24 km north of Pietermaritzburg to see the incredible 300ft Howick Falls. Other waterfalls in car from the city includes Karkloof Falls and Albert Falls to name a few.
Pietermaritzburg is a great base if you want to explore the fields of Battle of KwaZulu-Natal and there are more than six guidelines that you can take to see the different battlefields. The sites of the most famous battles are kwaGqokli Hill, Battle of Opath and the Battle of Ulundi.
The Midmar Public Resort and Nature Reserve which is approximately 15 minutes drive from Pietermaritzburg, is where you can enjoy sailing, canoeing and yachting. It is also a good place to fish for bass, bluegill and carp.
How about a visit to the Boston Bulwer Beat, which is located near Pietermaritzburg. This is a rural beautiful and peaceful which is popular for walking, hiking, biking and rafting. Boston Bulwer Beat also claims to be hand-gliding and paragliding capital of South Africa!
Remember that only about 77 km from Pietermaritzburg and Durban, which is a lively resort with a mile along the seafront!
