In 1871, Holland America Lines began its history as the Central - Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatwsschappij. Based in Rotterdam in Holland, and offering a service to the Americas, it became known as Holland America Line.
In 1895, the company offered its first vacation cruise in New York and in 1910 his leisure cruise from New York to the Holy Land. In 1970 Holland America Line suspended its transatlantic service and sold its transport goods. Holidays became his focus full time. In 1989, Holland America Line became a wholly owned division of Carnival Corporation, the largest company Cruising in the world.
Boarding was smooth and easy. Place the bags in garbage cans outside, walk inside, ID and boarding pass, please fill out the health questionnaire, obtained in a short online test, show them your credit card you use, smile for the camera to snap another picture and you're on board. Probably 20 minutes of arrival at first on mojito the Lido Deck. I've never had a better board.
The last time we were on the Oosterdam was in 2003 when it was brand new and I think someone took loving care of this beautiful boat. It is just as beautiful today as it was then. Our balcony stateroom was really nice and has more room for us to move, store clothing etc. and relax with a glass of wine passed the ocean.
Ok here we run into the only problem the entire cruise so far. We confirmed the end with chairs and a table for 8. We reached a top 4 with an old gentleman who also sailed on his first cruise with Air America, and had been assured of a large table like minded individuals.
It was ok, but not the most comfortable evening. A quick trip to the butler the next day we set a table for 6 with two other couples who were equally disappointed yesterday. We had a great table companions for the rest of the cruise.
The shore excursions, we chose to rank up there with some of the best shore excursions we have ever seen anywhere in the world. From Cabo San Lucas we went to Todos Santos for lunch at the Hotel California. This is a very interesting drive in the desert of Baja California from Bay of Cabo on the Sea of Cortez to the Pacific Ocean, where the driver stopped at an unexpected place because there were many whales to see.
The town is charming and some works of art, the most notable Rueben Gutierrez is spectacular. In passing, pottery Gutierrez prices very reasonable. Then it was lunch at the Hotel California, which had the wonderful food.
In Mazatlan, we signed Shrimp Fest. We went to a beautiful private residence on a hill overlooking the entire city, with beautiful gardens and lovely terraces set up to the crowd. They served Margaritas and beer and soft drinks all day and a buffet of all the shrimp you could eat in three different styles with rice and beans and guacamole and salsa and chips and tortillas over.
A small gallery of artisans was on the grounds and my wife bought the most amazing citrine necklace and freshwater pearls and then met the designer of the necklace, which has offered to put his clip on earrings to go with him and his e-mail when she had designed.
In Puerto Vallarta, we have "Rhythms of the Night" and you do not want to miss this tour! It begins by a journey in one hour by catamaran to a private beach all lit with tiki torches and absolutely beautiful. The crew of a catamaran ride show was very good.
The dinner was truly memorable as each party had a table for the number of people they designated. It was a buffet, but there were so many buffet tables set up there were no lines. Servers brought you drinks and all what you wanted, and then there's a show in an amphitheater. I'll admit that I was not looking forward to the show because some cultural performances are boring, but it was spectacular. Then we took the catamaran to the ship with all the stars, the lights of Puerto Vallarta and finally the beautiful illuminated Oosterdam for the evening. It was great!
The landing was smooth as embarkation. Remember way back when I said the rooms were not ready until 1:30? When you land, you may stay in your cabin until what they call the color of your luggage tag. This is great! Then you go to 2 chairs, a short line, show your passport and give the statement a customs official. Then, take your luggage quickly and in our case, take the first taxi in line and he went to the airport. Could not have been smoother!
We both work for us and build a website cruising while traveling. The Internet is a crucial part of cruising for us and the Oosterdam, we had wireless access in our cabin. You can buy packages from $ 100 for 250 minutes (40 cents per minute) on site. You can also add more minutes as you need and if you're on a package and you have more minutes while connected, they are charged to rate regardless of your package for calls.
It was our cruise of 11 to 9 years and I must say, even if we were to these ports before, this was one of the best cruises we have ever had!
