Famous artist of the nineteenth century American Thomas Cole (February 1, 1801 - February 11, 1848) was born in Lancashire, England. His family moved to the United States in 1918, when Cole received his basic training in the art of Stein, a portraitist. However, Cole has not been chosen as a portraitist and attention has shifted toward "landscape art". It is considered as the founder of the Hudson River School, a mid-nineteenth century American art movement. "Naturalism" and "romanticism" were the two main themes that characterize Cole works depicting American landscape quite realistic. The forms of man in his pictures are always of secondary importance compared the landscape around. He had the ability to paint landscapes with very fine detailing and he was also able to make spectacular paintings, with many imaginative and bold lighting effects. Although Cole was primarily a landscape painter, he also made allegorical paintings. One of his creations most popular in the last category is "The Course of Empire," a series of five, set in 1833-36, and "Voyage of Life" a series of four.
The significance of Thomas "The Course of Empire" lies partly in the fact that it was a representation feelings and emotions of Americans at this time. At this time, pastoral was considered the ultimate factor of human civilization to flourish and there was fear of the possible disintegration of the empire. The series includes "wild", "The Pastoral or Arcadian State "," consumption "," Destruction "and" Desolation ". This series of paintings reflects rather an imaginary city and the fall and depicts the growth of a society against the barbaric conditions for the ultimate in luxury, ending in destruction.
The city is shown located in the nearby valley of the river to its intersection with the sea a unique milestone, present in all five paintings in the series, is a huge rock dangerously perched on a cliff overlooking the river valley. "The Wild" reflects Native American Hunter wore animal skin on a stormy day. "The Pastoral or Arcadian State" lands on a clear summer / spring day, with a landscape typical of pre-organized urban Greece ancient. "Consumption of the Empire" shows a summer afternoon. Depicting the Ancient Rome, both banks for the river carry marble structures of architectural finesse. "The Destruction of Empire," portrays the sacking of Rome Vandal 455. The painting is full of destruction at all levels, to architectural integrity. "Desolation" is a scene after a year of destruction, leaving the country with few ruins, reminding glorious past. The very surprising "The Course of Empire" is now part of the collection at the New York Historical Society and remains one of the best pieces of art by Thomas Cole.
