From time immemorial, women have been the subject of art. She has charmed men, gods, beasts, or devils in fairy tales and supernatural stories. Though women play multifarious roles in real life, her image of a desirable object finds expression in all the major genres of art. Of all the major art genres, fantasy art has taken women to an altogether different level- the 'Ideal'. Painted by male artists of the age, these male depictions of women portray them in the height of their physical splendor and unearthly beauty.
Imagination run wild breeds fantasy- this might well explain how fantasy art came into being. The wild running of imagination implies the birth of supernatural themes, myths, or anything beyond the realm of the natural. In this realm, we come across supernatural men and women, either flowing in the clouds or blazing past a sea of fire. If carefully observed, women have been more often portrayed in fantasy art than men. As mermaids, fairies, warriors, witches- women constitute the inherent charm of fantasy art. Here is an attempt to analyze how women have been portrayed in fantasy art.
Beautiful mermaids with slender bodies abound in the fantasy land. They are scantily clad with the lower part of the body shaped like a fish. In these images, the woman portrayed does not come across as a powerful figure but as a delicate charming object. The same goes for some more fantasy women who can rightly be termed as "damsels in distress". Left alone in the mesmerizing land of heavenly flowers and shrubs, these damsels poignantly strike a pose waiting to be redeemed by their hero. Lovely fairies too end up being the object of the male gaze with their short top and flowing white gowns. Modern fantasy art even depicts fairies in short skirts.
The glorification of superheroes like Superman, Batman, and Spiderman paved the way for super heroines. These extraordinary women began to be sketched on canvas but once again ended up being sexual objects. Take for instance, the Wonder Woman, who possessed all the powers known to man. But depiction of her physical features draws only the male gaze. Clad in tight top (with heaving breasts) and different shorter versions of pants or skirts, she comes across more as a sex symbol than a superwoman.
Time and again, fantasy art gallery has depicted woman only as object of attention. Even the anti-heroines, the vamps and witches, have not been spared. They too turn up in Victoria's Secret collection and strike sleazy poses in their stilettos. All these facts should not be considered as voicing a feminist cause. It's a fact that women in fantasy art have been portrayed chiefly by men who have instilled their perception into the sketches. The good thing is women have always reigned in man's imagination- as object of desire, worship, evil, forgiveness, and love.
