When you get into more complex concepts of the werewolf or man-being, you start to have much more freedom in the how the structure of his character and backstory. For example, a tribal shaman can take on the characteristics of the totem animal of his people when he goes into a trance. This may allow it to be a completely different kind of se-beast.
Basically, any character you can talk to animals or the nature has the ability to become a beast were of some kind. This is because the connection with animals can be strengthened over time, allowing them to assume responsibility and abilities that interact with time. This was done particularly well in the fantasy series "The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, where the character Perrin began to talk to wolves, but gradually began to see their physical characteristics, such as eyes, the change to match that of the wolves was in communion with.
The werewolf is a complex character to try to control in a role-playing session. There is an inherent conflict between the civilized and the primitive world, that can give the character a depth and complexity that other creatures do not share. There is also a point of connection with nature and communion with the animals, which allows it to be really creative with their se-beast story again, if desired.
