Forty-some years ago, my uncle gave me an anthology of science fiction, a thick red hardcover book that I read from beginning to end. She inspired a life long love of the genre. The stories in this book made me think outside the box. They filled me with admiration for the imagination it took to write them, and sometimes they scared the hell out of me. This book has remained in my collection for years. At some when he disappeared, but not my memory. Recently I wanted to read it again and thank you to Alibris.com I could buy a used copy.

The title is OMNIBUS OF SCIENCE FICTION, edited by Groff Conklin, editor well known and prolific genre. It was published in 1952, age Gold Science Fiction. It is a heavy volume, 562 pages, with 43 stories divided into sections corresponding to a common theme. Some stories are fun, others are thinking, and some are adventurous. I love them all.

Part I. Wonders of Earth and Man

Katherine MacLean "and rejoice," originally published in Astounding Science Fiction in February 1950. When her husband takes off a trip archeology a biologist can experience rejuvenation on itself. Believing it will be immortal if it can avoid the accidental death, she became afraid to live. Her husband realizes that he must convince her that she will die in order to revive, and he said it was a slow growing tumor that is inoperable.

Part II. Inventions Dangerous and contrary

The intriguing story short, "A subway named Mobius" by AJ Deutsch was published in Astounding Science Fiction in December 1950. The Metro Boston Authority built an addition to the subway network and a disappearing with three hundred passengers. The closed system has become so interconnected and complex that was transformed into Mobius strip, the loop continues with one side made famous by MC Escher.

Part III. From Outer Space

In "The Color Out of Space" by HP Lovecraft surveyor discovers an abandoned farmhouse with an old well in center. The land is devoid of life and he inquired about the name - the blasted heath. An old hermit tells him the story. In the 1880s, the farm was productive until a meteorite was indescribable color crashed near the wells. After hearing the terrible circumstances that befell the farmer and his family, the land ends saying he will not return and do not recommend drinking water.

Part IV. Travel far

"Kaleidoscope" by Ray Bradbury is a heart-breaking story of astronauts adrift in space after their ship is destroyed. They are in contact with each other, but no hope of being rescued. A man laments that he has accomplished anything worthwhile, but that his life ends, it becomes a shooting star visible to a child on earth.

"Spectator Sport" by John D. MacDonald was first published in Thrilling Wonder Stories in February 1950. A man moves into the future and discovers nothing has really changed. Shortly after leaving someone invented virtual reality and the entire population is permanently connected to him.

Part VI. Worlds of Tomorrow

"History Lesson" by Arthur C. Clarke was first published in 1949. In the future, an ice age end looms. A tribe of nomadic humans moves toward the equator, but gets stuck between two glaciers advance. They hide a century, a few relics 21st cairn. Five thousand years later, reptiles Venusian Journey to the Earth and recover the relics. They try to learn about life on the third planet - by analyzing a cartoon film reel
